Kudos from The Libertarian Liquidationist

The Libertarian Liquidationist, in an article written by Hank (Henry Moore) titled "Kudos to The Blue Collar Economist," discovered both the review of my Selected Salvos book written by Robert A. McKeown at The Blue Collar Economist titled Salvos of Fun and Freedom and the article published by me in Libertarian News Examiner that featured McKeown and his blog that I titled "The Blue Collar Economist: Libertarian economics for the rest of us."

Got all that?

In his article Hank quotes from McKeon's review which includes some of McKeon's quotes of my quotes and then goes on to quote directly from my article that features McKeon's blog.

Got all that too?

Nothing like libertarian writers/bloggers/economists cross-pollinating one another for the benefit of fertilizing minds with the seeds of freedom!

In his article Hank goes on to chastise me, albeit gently, with "Still, we must be very careful to separate libertarianism, the ideology, from economics that usually fits well with libertarian ideas" and "there really is no such thing as 'libertarian economics.'"

And he's right, of course. I was using shorthand terms like "libertarian economics" and "government economics" to quickly and easily distinguish between the economics of coercion vice the economics of freedom.

Being a self-admitted economic ignoramus I find this to be an easy and effective rule of thumb.

If you're curious, as I was, about the definitions of "Libertarian" and especially "Liquidationist" as used by these folks you can find the answers at their Theory Page. All too economysterious for this self-admitted libertarian economic ignoramus.

San Francisco Book Review

As promised, David Lloyd Sutton of "The Sacramento Libertarian Examiner" gave Selected Salvos a five star rating when he submitted his review to the San Francisco Book Review.

Above is the top part of the page as it appeared on its website when it was posted on June 13, 2014.

Great Review from The Blue Collar Economist

Robert A. McKeown, a self-identified Austrian Economist and proprietor of The Blue Collar Economist has written a glowing review of "Selected Salvos from the Loose Cannon Libertarian, which, if enough people care, is merely Book One in a planned series of similar salvos.

McKeown says: "Garry Reed’s writing style is something bordering H.L. Mencken and Groucho Marx." Really? (Pause while I blush.)

Here's his opening teaser with a link to the full review:

Recently, I began reading Garry Reed’s book, “Selected Salvos from the Loose Cannon Libertarian” and found myself enjoying every page. Garry Reed’s writing style is something bordering H.L. Mencken and Groucho Marx. His quick wit and colorful turn of a phrase gives the reader something to chuckle about while being informed. After having read volumes of economics books and tomes this little collection of his articles, between 2001 and 2002, I found quite refreshing. It was like cheating on a diet with a pizza and a beer.Read the rest of this entry »

Thank you Robert McKeown!

Now, everyone, check out the Libertarian News Examiner article that features McKeown's website. It's great to finally discover articles for the non-academic, non-scholarly, non-professional libertarian who wants to understand the economics of freedom without slogging through all of the theorizing on government economic skulduggery. Another Book Review! Woohoo!

David Lloyd Sutton, also known as the Sacramento Libertarian Examiner, wrote the following book review for the San Francisco Book Review.

Selected Salvos for the Loose Cannon Libertarian

by David Lloyd Sutton, for the San Francisco Book Review

Buy My Book! Read My Book! It's Small! It's Fun! It's Cheap!” So reads Garry Reed’s online advertising for this deliciously irreverent collection.

He begins by defining and illustrating capitalism. Invoking Ludwig Von Mises? No, he invokes Scrooge McDuck. I think he made the best possible choice. Then he drifts into Government Chaos, detailing the runaway abuses of eminent domain and asset forfeiture. He explores the nanny state and political correctness with an essay on the future. Be very afraid.

Dropping his cannon balls on even more feet, Reed proceeds to a pithy and pointed examination of how “faith-based” stuff is a violation of the tenth amendment. Not content with that crop of crushed pinkies, he goes after the essence of Libertarianism, wanders into international non-interventionism, bombards jury nullification and the drug war.

Mr. Reed is a rather traditional Libertarian, espousing the stuffing of runaway government and imperialism back into the constitutional bottle. Some of his advocacy may appear a tad naive, with a tidal wave of poverty-stricken immigrants awaiting his open borders. With welfare systems undissolved, that idea would be disastrous without preparation.

Salvos is stimulating, amusing, and engaging. Every thinking person should buy and read it.

"I gave this 5 stars," Sutton told me in an email.
